Why Quality Is Important
With there being so many supplement companies nowadays, it can be hard to distinguish the quality brands from those that are inferior. Occasionally, you’ll hear about a brand making headlines for containing banned substances or not meeting label claims, but this could be just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s vital that you understand what you’re putting into your body, and whether that supplement is helpful or harmful to your body. Apart from potentially containing banned substances, you might not be getting what you paid for, even if you went with the cheaper option.
When it comes to quality of supplements, ultimately, you get what you pay for. If the brand you buy is the cheapest out there, then it’s likely they’re going to be substandard when it comes to quality.
There are a few things to consider when it comes to the quality of your supplements:
- Manufacturing Practices/Facilities- Are the products made in a governed facility that requires that certain quality measures are in place? GMP isn’t even much to boast about, it’s a great starting point, but FSSC2200 certified manufacturing is a much better marker to look for from a quality standpoint, as extra measures/procedures are in place when it comes to maintaining quality control.
- Doses- Take a look at the ingredients panel on the product you’re looking to purchase. Does the preworkout you’re looking to buy, only contain 2g of Beta Alanine when the efficacious dose is at 3.2g? Look for products that don’t just under-dose ingredients to save money.
- Fillers- It’s also VITAL to inspect the “Other Ingredients” list to quickly inspect what other ingredients are included in the product. You may have seen “Taurine”,”Glutamine” or “Milk Powder” included in the ingredients list of some whey protein products… which is a red flag for amino spiking. This would be a good indicator that the quality of the product you’re looking at is not up to scratch.
At the end of the day, there’ll always be brands looking to make a quick buck and supply a cheap, poor quality product to unknowing customers, but it’s very important to try to educate yourself so that you can find brands that you can trust when it comes to buying quality supplements. After all, these supplements are being put into your body and become part of you, so always keep quality in mind when browsing for your next supplement purchase.
